The field of SEO/SEM is still so new, therefore there is much information on the internet, search conferences forums and so forth to gain the knowledge you need to know basics of web design. In addition, I have learned so much from my colleague mentioned above, so again, make friends with your web designers. If you would like web design experience, take a "Continuing Education" class at your local community college. Take an online "intro" course, but there is no need really to "become" a web designer to enter into the field of internet marketing. I will have to respectfully disagree.
